Turkey Creek Road Drag Racing

There was some life and death drama in the Brixworth subdivision in South Farragut last Friday night. I received an email describing what occurred that included the pictures you see here. The writer of the email requested that no names be mentioned, as they were not sure of the age of the two young drivers.

A black Honda and a black Lexus were drag racing down Turkey Creek Road heading west towards the Brixworth subdivision entrance. There was a screech of tires as both cars went into the subdivision at a high rate of speed. They continued up the hill and around the cul-de-sac and then went speeding down the Brixworth Blvd hill.

The driver of the Honda was going too fast to stop at the stop sign at the base of the Brixworth subdivision. Even though the driver tried to stop he could not and went across Turkey Creek Road, jumped the curb, and collided with a tree. That tree saved his life.

If he had gone just to the left of the tree he would have gone over the small hill down to the railroad tracks. The train came just a few minutes after his wreck.

As the residents of Brixworth came to give aid and assistance to the driver who wrecked the other driver in the Lexus got in his car, gave the one finger salute and drove away. It is not known if he was arrested by the Sheriff's Department.

This is a heavily traveled road and it is fortunate there was not a car on Turkey Creek Road when this out of control car shot across the road. The most popular walking trail in Farragut is on Turkey Creek and many people walk across this intersection.

What is Farragut High School doing about the wreckless driving of its students? What is the Town of Farragut doing about the ever-growing problem of wreckless driving in Farragut? Most importantly what are the parents of these young drivers doing?

How many young people must die before our community decides there is a problem?

Comments:
That is one lucky young man. If that happened where I live his troubles would have begun after I pulled him out of the car. He would have wished the train did run over him.

FR has it right about the parents. Who in their right mind would buy a hot car for a teenage boy? Or girl for that matter. Sounds like some nice people helped that boy. Did he apologize to anyone? I would like to know. There is no excuse for that behavior.

The fruit does not fall far from the tree.

We have the same problem where we live. Parents that cannot say no. You just know one of these kids will end up dead. It is so sad.

The wealth of many Farragutians leads them to buy the love of their children. Unbelievable.

First I would never defend any of these people that race on our public streets. As a matter of fact, I am horrified by how fast the majority of the people in West Knoxville drive (for example on Northshore, Virtue, Parkside). But to say that the type of car a parents buys for their kid is an attempt at "buying" their love is just ridiculous. Parents generally want what is best for their kids. I had a used, beat up car when I was young, but it was the best they could afford, and I was grateful for what they gave me. Parents with a lot of money do the same, they buy the best they can afford for their kids to keep them safe. If that means a big SUV, Lexus or BMW, so be it. The only problem I see are parents who do not take action to insure their kids drive safely, regardless of the car they drive.

Holy sh_t! That was close. Lucky lad, I must say.

Ever notice that these things seem to happen in suburban sprawl areas?

This is what can happen when there is a culture that promotes (perhaps not on purpose) ignoring traffic rules. This problem is not a Farragut problem only. It is a Knoxville problem. Have you noticed that the speed signs on Hwy 40 are always ignored by most drivers, including cops?

I work in the offices on Center Park drive between Kingston Pike and Parkside. There is a automobile shop a few buildings down from us that customizes these "tuner" cars like the boys were driving. Every day these kids in their cars are racing through the parking lot with wreckless abandoment. I see these young people all over Farragut in their expensive mommy and daddy bought vehicles, racing from light to light, buzzing their exhaust systems, defining the noise laws with the thump, thump of their stereos. It is time for a little law enforcement in Farragut and West Knoxville.

Looks like FR has realized that Farragut cannot change...why? It is the embodiment of suburban sprawl and nearly every issue posted here is directly related to sprawl.

I suppose he saw the light and has given up.

Farragut Republican? He probably thinks those are children of Democrates.
Is he saying this is not a good place to live becuase of a teenage driver car crash?
Can Farragut change to Republican Idiotology?
Slow down kids, be careful out there.
County commission hurry up on that new school..there's an unhappy Republican out there. 2007

i don't see how this a republican or democrat issue, except how you approach the solution.

Personally, I don't think this is anything a few SERIOUS speed bumps can't fix. I'm talking about the kind that could send you airborne or destroy your car if you hit it too fast.

I agree with the last comment I just read.Speed bumps are the answer.Only last week I was on Turkey Creek Rd and a white Camero was coming toward me on my side of the street.I blew my horn and just in the nick of time the other driver swerved to miss me. Thank God I am still alive. My home isn't too far from where I almost lost my life;I was in shock when I drove into my driveway. There has already been one death on Turkey Creek since we moved here and I don't want to be (nor any of my love ones) a fatality, do you? There must be speed bumps put in on Turkey Creek, especially near Anchor Park, since we have no law enforcement in Farragut. Anonymous
